INDIAN WELLS, California, March 22 - Fourth-seeded
Russian Vera Zvonareva clinched her ninth WTA title by
outplaying Serbian Ana Ivanovic 7-6 6-2 in Sunday's final of the
WTA event at Indian Wells.
Playing more consistently in difficult gusting winds at the
Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Zvonareva reeled off six games in a
row in the second set to wrap up victory in just under two
hours.
Both players were broken twice in the opening set before the
24-year-old Russian took the tiebreak 7-5 after fifth-seeded
Ivanovic netted a forehand.
The elegant Serb, who hammered Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova
6-4 6-3 in last year's final, struggled in the conditions,
piling up 46 unforced errors and five double faults.
