Wright picks up two more offers

The recruitment of Corona (Calif.) defensive back Demetrius Wright continues to pick up steam. The athlete picked up two more offers and is hearing from a host of schools at the moment.

Tennessee and Washington were the first to offer Wright. Arizona and Arizona State came next and now you can throw two more schools in to the mix.

"Oregon State and San Diego State are my latest offers," Wright said. "I'm also hearing from UCLA, USC, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Stanford, Vandy, Duke, Utah and a few others."

Wright has made no secret for his affection of UCLA, saying he would commit on the spot if offered. The athlete recently attended the Bruins Junior Day and although he wasn't offered, said it was a great visit.

"Honestly, it was one of the best experiences of my life," Wright said. "They are very high on my list and I like the coaching staff a lot. They were informative and friendly and shared their own experiences about the recruiting process and I could relate well to them.

"The campus was nice and UCLA is definitely a place I know I could be comfortable at for four years. Right now, I'm just looking for a school where I can get a great education, play early and I would like to stay close to home as well. UCLA, USC, Oregon State, Arizona State and Arizona would be my top five right now."

Academically, Wright is carrying a 3.0 GPA and says he would like to major in Criminal Justice. He'll attend the SoCal NIKE Camp in April.

Carrington lands big offer

Devon Carrington (Chandler, Ariz./ Hamilton) is easily among the most talented safeties in the West region this year. The defensive back picked up his fourth offer, all from the Pac 10, on Monday and could be close on a few more.

Stanford, Arizona and Arizona State were the first to offer Carrington and another school that has recruited the Grand Canyon State well the last few years threw their hat in to the ring Monday.

"I just got offered by Cal," and excited Carrington said. "Coach Simmons is the one recruiting me and I'm definitely interested in Cal. I know some of the guys on the team already like Marc Anthony, who lives down the street from me and I played with Covaughn Deboskie.

"My goal is to commit by the end of the summer so I'm going to take some unofficial visits and Cal is definitely a place I'm going to check out. I also want to visit Stanford and I may check out the Arizona schools too. I talk to Coach Kish at UA a lot and I'm close with the ASU coaches as well."

Carrington could hear as soon as Tuesday about another potential scholarship offer.

"I'm supposed to talk with Coach Weis at Notre Dame Tuesday," Carrington said. "I talked with Coach Hart Monday and they sound very interested so after track practice, I'm going to give Coach Weis a call and see what he has to say.

"If they offer, that would be huge and I'll definitely take an unofficial visit out there in the summer as well. Once school starts, I just want to focus on football and my schoolwork so that's why I'm looking to commit early. I'm not going to rush it or anything and if I don't know, I'll push it back but hopefully I can get this done early."

Two-way standout lands first two offers

Derron Smith (Banning, Calif./ Banning) is an electric athlete who excelled as a dual threat quarterback and defensive back a year ago. He landed his first two offers and they definitely won't be his last.

Smith is a superior athlete with great speed and quickness. He's elusive in the open field and could play a number of positions at the next level with corner or receiver his likely destinations.

Smith threw for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for another 1,094 yards and eight more scores. He added 87 tackles and three interceptions on defense to earn league Def. MVP and 1st team all-CIF honors.

"UNLV and San Diego State both offered late last week," Smith said. "I'm also hearing a lot from UCLA, Cal, Arizona State and Washington. I went to UCLA's Junior Day a week ago and it was great. They have a beautiful campus and the coaches were real cool.

"I also checked out ASU a little while I was in Phoenix for a camp. I basically just walked the campus with my family but it was nice and I'm going to camp with Cal in the Spring. I also talked to Washington's DB Coach, Demetrius Martin, and he told me they liked my film and he wants me to call back on Thursday after he shows my film to Coach Sarkisian."
