SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers starter Scott Feldman is having less trouble pitching than chewing gum.
A day after needing a root canal on a tooth he broke while chewing gum, Feldman had his second consecutive scoreless outing with three innings for Texas in a 6-4 loss Tuesday to the San Francisco Giants.
Feldman walked two and allowed one hit, following up his previous start when he retired all six batters he faced.
"I just tried to keep the ball down, get some quick outs," Feldman said. "I was kind of frustrated with my breaking ball."
After leaving the game, Feldman threw about 20 breaking pitches in the bullpen to work out some of the kinks. The right-hander is trying to add a slider.
"I thought they had some quick bite to them, but they weren't in the strike zone," manager Ron Washington said. "He's trying to get a feel for it. I'm more than certain that by time we get out of here, he'll have it down."
Washington made a dentist visit of his own Tuesday morning, in his uniform. He even had to take pain medication during the game.
Joe Martinez was flawless through three innings. But four of the first five Texas batters he faced in the fourth reached base, though only one scored.
Martinez, 10-10 with an Eastern League-best 2.49 ERA at Double-A Connecticut last season, is getting a chance to start while No. 5 starter Jonathan Sanchez is with Puerto Rico's team at the World Baseball Classic. The right-hander struck out two and allowed three hits.
San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy took advantage of a travel squad missing several regulars to shuffle a few players.
Eugenio Velez started at second base before moving to left field. Kevin Frandsen, in the mix at second base, played shortstop and John Bowker started at first instead of the outfield.
"We wanted to get them some playing time so we can have some flexibility," Bochy said.
David Murphy put the Rangers up 4-2 in the sixth with his second homer of the spring, a solo shot pulled down the right-field line well beyond the 350-foot fence.
Brendan Donnelly, in camp on a minor league deal as he tries to earn a spot in the Rangers' bullpen, allowed two runs and three hits in his only inning. Two of the hits were doubles to deep center.
The Giants tied it in the seventh when Buster Posey had an RBI double and scored on an error. Matt Downs had the tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth, though another runner was thrown out trying to score on the same play.
Michael Young, the five-time All-Star shortstop now playing third base for Texas, had a triple and scored in the fourth. Elvis Andrus, the rookie now playing shortstop, hit an RBI single and Young drove in a run with a fielder's choice the following inning.
Game notes
Rangers RHP Luis Mendoza left the game because of a blister on his middle finger. ... Andruw Jones, also in Rangers camp on a minor league contract, had a pinch-hit double and is 6-for-12 with three extra-base hits since starting 2-for-14. ... It was only the second time in their 15 spring training games that the Giants didn't hit a home run.
