'Get Ready to Shred'

A big day in Crested Butte as juniors shared the Headwall venue with men's and women's qualifiers at the 18th annual Suburu U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships. Tomorrow (Friday) is Day 1 of the main event with two runs slated for the finals Saturday. Full(ish) results follow with additional beta provided courtesy of Aspen Ripper Factory emissaries Chris Tatsuno (the No. 4 qualifier today) and Adam Moszynski, who is prequalified for the main event.

Also, the U.S. Extremes is twittering these days and dig live webcasting tomorrow at freeskiingworldtour.com.

MOSZYNSKI:
• "The venue for tomorrow looks awesome; big and mean. I'm really excited. It's the first event of the year, so all the big names are here. It's supposed to be bluebird too tomorrow and that makes everything more fun. People generally are happy when they ski a line that they can actually see."

• "Me and [Mark] Welgos went up today and watched a bit and then scoped our venue for tomorrow a bit. Today was pretty impressive. A couple of junior kids were pushing it to the max. A 14-year-old did a double backflip and another one pulled a corked 7. They're definitely skiing the venues differently than the big guys: Really safe and conservative, but then they find their way to a big feature and throw big tricks of it."

TATSUNO:
• "I was just trying to make it through and it worked out pretty good. We were in Headwall, which is also referred to as Angle Gully, and it's the normal qualifier venue. It's pretty rocky but there's more snow in the gully now than I've seen in the last six years. It just filled in differently this year. There were definitely a few rocks, but you could avoid them pretty easily."

• "No injuries or carnage, and definitely some good skiers. The juniors were just going off. Leo Ahrens threw a sick double backflip and got the Young Gun award. The Juniors and Masters had their qualifying yesterday [Wednesday] in Little Hourglass, and then the Masters will compete again with us tomorrow. The venue will be Staircase Proper, including Slot Rocks, Body Bag Chutes and Dead End Chutes. Sounds great, right? Exactly. It's been closed the last few days—they held the North Face Masters snowboarding comp on it last weekend—and no one's been in there since freshies fell, so that's good."

• "Right now everyone's points are at zero and points will begin adding up. Plan is to get one run tomorrow, then do a steep cut, and then do a final on Saturday, then another cut, then a super final run with maybe the top 10 men and top 5 women. We're off to get some food real quick and we'll take it easy tonight, get up early tomorrow and get ready to shred."
