TORONTO -- The National Hockey League has suspended Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec for two games without pay for tripping a player from behind during a game.
In the second period of Wednesday's game against Edmonton, Plekanac took down Oilers defenseman Denis Grebeshkov from behind, resulting in an injury to the Edmonton player.
Plekanec was assessed a minor penalty for tripping on the play.
Plekanec will forfeit $17,204.30, with the money going to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. He will miss games against Colorado and Vancouver and is eligible to return Feb. 15 against Washington.
