MONTREAL -- Ryan O'Byrne put the puck in his own net on a delayed penalty to send the game into overtime, and Bill Guerin scored the shootout clincher for the New York Islanders in a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.
Guerin was credited with the tying goal on O'Byrne's gaffe. Richard Park and Trent Hunter also scored for the surging Islanders, who won for the fifth time in six games.
Steve Begin, Josh Gorges and Maxim Lapierre scored rare goals for the Canadiens, who lost their second consecutive shootout but still have points in four of their last five games.
With the Canadiens nursing a 3-2 lead in the third period, Sean Bergenheim was whistled for holding and Carey Price left the Montreal net for an extra attacker.
The puck went into the Canadiens end and O'Byrne, pressured by Doug Weight, passed the puck back to no one. It slowly slid into the net, tying the score 3-all at 15:13.
Flyers 4, Stars 3
PHILADELPHIA -- Mike Knuble scored two goals, including the tiebreaker at 14:52 of the third period, and Philadelphia beat Dallas for its fifth straight victory.
Simon Gagne set up the go-ahead goal by stealing the puck at the blue line and passing it to Mike Richards, who fed Knuble in the slot for a one-timer.
Scottie Upshall and Jeff Carter also scored for the Flyers, who have won six of seven. Gagne extended his points streak to eight games with a pair of assists on Knuble's goals.
Mike Modano scored twice and Landon Wilson had a goal for the Stars, who have lost three straight and six of seven.
Rangers 4, Coyotes 1
NEW YORK -- Brandon Dubinsky scored his first goal in 14 games and Nikolai Zherdev had three assists for New York, which stretched Phoenix's losing streak to six games.
Buoyed by the return of top center Scott Gomez after a five-game absence due to a leg injury, the Rangers shook off an early deficit and snapped their skid at two. New York, 4-2 in its last six, moved into a tie with Boston atop the Eastern Conference (32 points).
Blair Betts got the Rangers even in the first period, and defenseman Dan Girardi added insurance with a power-play goal in the third. Henrik Lundqvist returned to the net for the first time in five days and made 35 saves for his NHL-leading 13th win.
Gomez sealed it by scoring into an empty net with 27.9 seconds left.
Enver Lisin scored and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 32 shots for the Coyotes, 0-4-2 during their slide.
Panthers 3, Hurricanes 2
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Gregory Campbell's goal snapped a tie late in the second period and sent Florida to a victory over Carolina.
Ville Peltonen and David Booth also scored and Tomas Vokoun made 27 saves for the Panthers, who stopped a two-game skid as they opened a three-game homestand.
Tuomo Ruutu and Chad LaRose scored for the Hurricanes, who were coming off a loss to Nashville on Sunday that ended a three-game winning streak.
Wild 4, Capitals 3
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Cal Clutterbuck's first two NHL goals gave Minnesota a badly needed offensive boost and sparked the Wild, who hung on against the injury-depleted and travel-weary Washington Capitals.
Marek Zidlicky's 5-on-3 slap shot, following consecutive closing-hand-on-the-puck penalties called 26 seconds apart on the Capitals' Tom Poti and Alex Ovechkin, zipped past goalie Jose Theodore early in the third period for a 3-0 advantage.
James Sheppard scored 4 minutes later for Minnesota.
Niklas Backstrom made 25 saves for the Wild, but he unraveled over the final 6 minutes and gave up goals to Matt Bradley, Ovechkin and the other Nicklas Backstrom -- with 1:44 left -- that whittled the lead to one.
Backstrom's score against his namesake and natural Scandinavian rival gave him 16 points in his last nine games. He's from Sweden, and Minnesota's goalie is a native of Finland.
Ovechkin has 20 points in his last 10 games.
