George Mason 80, Vermont 79

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Darryl Monroe hit two free throws with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to lift George Mason to an 80-79 victory over Vermont on Saturday.

The extra session had six lead changes.

Vermont (1-0) regained the lead, 79-78, on a lay-up by Mike Trimboli with 1:13 to go and the Catamounts later got the ball back, but a 5-second violation gave George Mason (1-0) another chance.

Monroe, however, missed a lay-up, got his own rebound and was fouled. He sank both free throws to wrap up a 19-point, 17-rebound performance.

Vermont's Marqus Blakely led all scorers with 24 points.

Trailing 70-66, Vermont pulled even on Trimboli's two free throws and Blakely's lay up with 2:02 left. Neither team could convert in its last possessions, sending the game into overtime.
