Status of Rays' game Tuesday up in the air because

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels were holding out hope that their game scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field will not be postponed because of Tropical Storm Fay.

Team officials met Monday to pore over weather forecasts and discuss contingency plans that could include not playing the game and rescheduling it as part of a Wednesday doubleheader in the domed stadium.

"Currently we are planning on playing the game. Certainly the circumstances can change," Rays president Matt Silverman said before the start of a three-game series Monday night. "We will continue to monitor the storm and its progress. We will continue to consult with government agencies, as well as the Angels and the (American) League."

Fay, which could intensify to hurricane force, is expected to make landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast -- south of the Tampa Bay area -- on Tuesday. The Rays and Angels are scheduled to play at 7:10 p.m.

"If the storm continues its current track, and the road conditions are safe, we will play the game," Silverman said. "We'll monitor the weather throughout the day. If there's going to be a call to postpone, it likely would be made in the afternoon."

Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels were planning to remain in their Florida hotel and not leave the area.

"We're getting a lot of information quickly," Scioscia said. "Right now it look like there's a chance we're going to be able to stay here and grind it out at the hotel."
