Dodgers 3, Brewers 3

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have played exhibition games in Florida, China and Arizona this year. They're finally headed home to California.

Brad Penny was wild but effective Tuesday, and the Dodgers concluded the Arizona portion of their spring training journey with a 3-3 tie against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Dodgers, who face the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday, tied the score on Blake DeWitt's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning off Dave Bush.

Los Angeles manager Joe Torre informed Milwaukee manager Ned Yost that he was out of pitchers after Mike Myers got the final out in the bottom of the ninth.

Both starting pitchers turned in strong performances.

Penny struggled with his command, issuing five walks in three innings, but allowed just one hit and one run.

Brewers starter Carlos Villanueva pitched more innings than expected, due to a low pitch count. He allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

Bush went the rest of the way, allowing five hits and one run.

Left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who followed Penny to the mound for Los Angeles, was particularly impressive. Kershaw yielded one hit in three innings while striking out six.

Kershaw is slated to open the season in Double-A, but Torre said he has been very impressive this spring.

"We brought him along this week because we want to expose him to hopefully what he will see moving forward," Torre said. "I'm not sure what he still needs other than the experience of going out there and pitching innings. We're certainly going to keep an eye on that, because that will be a big factor in determining how quickly he can help us."

After the game, Yost announced his rotation to start the season.

Yost, who had already said Ben Sheets and Jeff Suppan would pitch the first two games in Chicago, said right-handers Bush and Villanueva and lefty Manny Parra would fill the other spots, in that order.

Earlier in the day, the Brewers released right-hander Claudio Vargas, one of the candidates for the rotation.

"We have another tough decision to make in two weeks," Yost said, referring to right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who is expected to join the rotation two weeks into the season after recovering from knee surgery.

The Brewers trailed 2-1 before scoring twice in the seventh. Rickie Weeks delivered one run with an RBI single and Joe Dillon the other with a run-scoring groundout.

The Brewers had just four hits off six Los Angeles pitchers. The Dodgers got 11 hits.
