US considering 6 sites for World Cup qualifying semifinals

CHICAGO -- The U.S. Soccer Federation is considering six
sites for its three possible home matches in the semifinals of
qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

In contention to host the games are Bridgeview, Ill.; Columbus,
Ohio; Commerce City, Colo.; Frisco, Texas; Seattle; and Washington,
D.C., U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said Thursday.

The United States, seeking its sixth straight World Cup berth,
has a first-round bye and meets Barbados or Dominica in the second
round, playing at Carson, Calif., on June 15 and in the Caribbean
the following week.

If the U.S. advances, it would have home games Sept. 10 (most
likely against Trinidad and Tobago), Oct. 11 (most likely Cuba) and
Nov. 19 (most likely Guatemala).

The top two teams in the group advance to next year's six-nation
finals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region.
CONCACAF has three berths in the 32-nation World Cup, and the No. 4
team advances to a playoff against the No. 5 nation from South
America.
