Winona St. tightens grip on NSIC with win

WINONA, Minn. -- Third-ranked Winona State stretched its
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference lead to two games with a
71-66 win over seventh-ranked Northern State on Friday.

Ryan Gargaro had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who
improved to 21-1 and 10-0 in the NSIC. WSU has won 15 straight
games, and 40 straight in the NSIC.

NSU (17-2, 8-2) failed in its first attempt to move head coach
Don Meyer into second place on the NCAA all-division coaches win
list. He remains tied with former North Carolina coach Dean Smith
with 879 wins.

The Wolves shot 56 percent in the first half, but trailed 34-33
at the break. They outshot the Warriors 49 percent to 44 percent,
but they were unable to overcome a 16-7 edge in free throws by WSU.

Ben Fischer had 14 points for WSU. Travis Whippel added 13 and
Quincy Henderson 11.

Dan DeWitt had 21 points to lead the Wolves in scoring. Kevin
Ratzsch had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Craig Nelson chipped in
11 points.

NSU saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end. Both of its
losses have been to WSU.
