Jockey Kieren Fallon banned 1{ years for banned substance

PARIS -- Champion jockey Kieren Fallon was banned 1½ years
after a second positive test for an unidentified banned substance.

The Irishman appealed Thursday's ruling by the governing body of
thoroughbred and steeplechase racing in France. He can race in
France until his appeal is heard. No hearing date was set.

Fallon tested positive for cocaine Aug. 19 in Deauville after
riding Myboycharlie. He also served a six-month ban from December
2006 to June 2007 after testing positive for cocaine while riding
in France.

In December, the 42-year-old jockey was cleared of race-fixing
charges that stopped him from racing for 17 months in Britain. A
judge threw out the case for lack of evidence.

Fallon and five others were alleged to have plotted to stop 27
horses from winning races between December 2002 and August 2004 and
defrauding online gambling customers. The charges were dismissed
before any defendants testified.

Fallon became British horse racing's champion jockey for the
first time in 1997. He won the English Derby in 1999, 2003 and
2004. He also won three more English classics -- the 2,000 Guineas,
1,000 Guineas and Oaks -- and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at
Longchamps in 2005 and 2007.
