VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Samuel Haanpaa scored 15 points to lead
Valparaiso to a 60-56 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Thursday
night in the Horizon League. The Crusaders took the lead for good with 10:48 left on a
Haanpaa 3-pointer that made it 44-42. The Flames narrowed it to
58-56 on a Scott Vandermeer layup, but Valpo's Jarryd Loyd hit two
free throws to preserve the win. Loyd finished with 13. Shawn Huff had 10 points and seven
rebounds for Valparaiso (14-6, 4-4), which was outrebounded 45-33
and trailed 40-33 at the break. Josh Mayo scored 16 to lead Illinois-Chicago (10-9, 4-4). Robert
Bush added 14. Vandermeer finished with a career-high 21 rebounds. Illinois-Chicago had its worst shooting half of the season, 17.1
percent from the field in the second half.
