Two players stabbed during a fight expected to recover

SALT LAKE CITY -- Two Utah football players were stabbed
during a fight outside a party and were expected to recover.

Defensive linemen Paul Kruger and Greg Newman were injured in
the fight late Saturday in an area just south of Salt Lake City,
officials said.

Lt. Jason Johnson of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office said
deputies were called to the party because of noise and learned of
the stabbing after they arrived. The victims had already left the
party and investigators were still trying to figure out Sunday who
had stabbed them.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, in a news release Sunday night,
said two players were involved but he did not have enough
information to comment.

"When I learn more about what happened, I will make a
statement," Whittingham said.

Kruger's father told The Salt Lake Tribune that his son was
stabbed in the abdomen and expected him to be hospitalized for
several days. Newman was stabbed in the back with a screwdriver and
David Kruger, Paul's younger brother and a recruit who plans to
sign with Utah next month, was hit in the head and needed stitches,
the elder Paul Kruger said.

Johnson said investigators were still trying to figure out what
led to the fight and who did the stabbing.
