Vendt sets American record in 1,000-yard freestyle

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Erik Vendt set an American record in
the 1,000-yard freestyle Friday night in the Southern California
Grand Prix.

The 27-year-old Olympian won in 8 minutes, 36.49 seconds,
lowering the mark of 8:42.64 set by Robert Margalis on March 1,
2007, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Fellow Olympian Larsen Jensen was second in 8:58.64. Vendt and
Jensen finished ahead of six teenagers ranging in age from 15 to
17.

Like Vendt, two-time Olympian Kaitlin Sandeno led all the way in
winning the women's 1,000 in 9:30.62 at the Belmont Plaza indoor
pool.

Mary Descenza finished second in 9:37.52.

The four-day meet is being swum in yards instead of Olympic
meters.
