Winthrop holds off late rally to beat Liberty

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Michael Jenkins scored 12 points and had
six rebounds to help Winthrop to a 55-48 win over Liberty on
Tuesday night.

The Eagles (10-7, 1-1 Big South Conference) led throughout the
second half.

The Flames (8-9, 0-2) were down just 42-40 with eight minutes to
go, but Winthrop went on a 9-3 run and took a 51-43 lead on
Jenkins' 3-pointer with 1:23 to go.

TeeJay Bannister hit a 3-pointer and two free throws for Liberty
to cut the deficit to 51-48, but Taj McCullough got dunks with 18
seconds left and three seconds to go to seal the win for the
Eagles.

Anthony Smith led all scorers with 17 points, while Alex McLean
added 10 points and nine rebounds for Liberty.

McCullough scored 10 points and Mantoris Robinson added nine
points and seven rebounds for Winthrop.
