Conley's recruiting keys: Ask the right questions

A good recruiter should have specific questions to ask a recruit. Time is of the essence in recruiting, and you must find out as early as possible if you have a legitimate opportunity to land the athlete. Each player and each story is different but the bottom line is if you ask the right questions and are a good listener, you can find out crucial information that may give you a fighting chance to win that particular recruiting battle.

We lost out on a great player, Kellen Winslow Jr., by not asking the right questions. This talented tight end was living on the West Coast with his father. We didn't realize until late in the recruiting process that the mom, who was living on the East Coast, had a huge say on where Kellen would attend college. We may not have got him anyway, but shame on us for not doing our homework.
