Class of 2008 superlatives: Wide receivers

Julio Jones is the first wide receiver to rank No. 1 in the ESPN 150. Tom Lee/Foley High School Athletics

With as much as we are seeing the ball flying through the air in college football these days, the abundance of wide receivers can never be too strong. This class features the deepest group of wide receivers we have seen in the past few years. Once again, size continues to skyrocket, and these players are beginning to look like small H-backs. Of the top 15 receiver prospects we have graded, 14 of them are 6-1 or taller, and nine of them are 6-3 or above.

However, with college coaches looking for "space" players more than ever, I believe over the next few seasons we could see the trend move back toward the smaller 5-9 to 6-0 playmaker that can be lethal after the catch and make people miss in the open field. This is what the spread offense is all about with the short-to-intermediate passing game. The big guys are great, but it is very difficult to find the larger, more physical wide receiver that also has great vertical speed and elusiveness in space.
