Delaware St. 29, Howard 13

DOVER, Del. (AP) -- Quarterback Vashon Winton completed 16-of-24 passes for 185 yards as Delaware State beat Howard 29-13 Saturday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

Kareem Jones rushed for a game-high 53 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 68 yards. Jones scored on a five-yard run to tie the game 7-7 with 29 seconds left in the second quarter.

The touchdown began a string of 29 unanswered points that sent Howard (4-7, 2-6 MEAC) to its third straight defeat. The Hornets (10-1, 8-0 MEAC) won their eighth straight.

Delaware State scored 12 points in a 1:55 span of the third quarter to take control of the game.

DSU linebacker Russell Reeves sacked Howard quarterback Brian Johnson in the end zone for a safety to give the Hornets a 9-7 lead. After the free kick by Howard, Delaware State moved from its 40 to the Howard 7-yard line before Peter Gaertner connected on a 24-yard field goal to give the Hornets a 12-7 lead with 12:21 left in the third.

On the ensuing Delaware State kickoff, Howard's Jarahn Williams fumbled the return and Brandon Hudson ran 10 yards for a touchdown that put the Hornets ahead 19-7.

Gaertner added a 33-yarder field goal in the fourth quarter, and Lennox Norville rounded out the scoring with four-yard touchdown run late in the quarter.
