Sutherland grabs 4-stroke lead in Pebble Beach Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH., Calif. -- Kevin Sutherland shot a 10-under 62
on Thursday to take a four-stroke lead over Rocco Mediate and Joel
Kribel after the first round of the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach
Invitational.

Sutherland, the runner-up this year in the PGA Tour's AT&T
Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, had eight birdies and an eagle on the
Del Monte Golf Course.

"I drove the ball well, I hit my wedges well and I putted
well," said Sutherland, the tournament winner in 2000. "At that's
what you have to do on the course. Obviously, it's shorter than
we're used to on the PGA Tour, but it's a good change of pace."

The 36th annual event features players from the PGA, LPGA,
Champions and Nationwide tours as well as mini-tour players and
amateur foursomes.

Mediate also played at Del Monte. He won the Callaway event in
1999.

"It was good day," Mediate said. "I hit eight greens and had
six birdies. Del Monte can be a hard golf course. I had never shot
better than 3 under before."

Kribel, a former PGA Tour regular who won the Monterey Open last
month, opened at Pebble Beach. Craig Barlow and Tom Byrum shot 67s
at Del Monte.

Leta Lindley shot a 68 at Del Monte, the lowest among seven LPGA
Tour entrants.

Tommy Armour III's 68 was the low round at Spyglass Hill.
