Already ineligible, Stanford 7-footer suspended indefinitely

STANFORD, Calif. -- Brook Lopez, a 7-foot sophomore who was already academically ineligible for the start of Stanford's season, has been suspended indefinitely from the team for missing classes.

In a story Friday in the San Francisco Chronicle, coach Trent Johnson said Lopez missed two days of classes and one practice this week, prompting the suspension.

The suspension went into effect Thursday. Lopez will not be able to practice or participate in any team activities while serving the suspension, Johnson said.

According to the Chronicle,
Johnson said he will reassess Lopez's situation next Friday. If Lopez shows acceptable progress and meets his academic obligations, he will be allowed to return to the team.

Lopez, who will sit out the Cardinal's first nine games, averaged 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 25.2 minutes last season. He played in 26 games, starting 18, after being slowed early by a back injury. Named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team, Lopez opted against entering the NBA draft.

His twin brother, Robin, also plays for the Cardinal.

Information from The Associated Press was included in this report.
