Former 3-year-old champion Slew o'Gold euthanized

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Slew o'Gold, a champion 3-year-old colt who
went on to sire 28 stakes winners, has died at Three Chimneys Farm.
He was 27.

Slew o'Gold, part of the first crop from 1977 Triple Crown
winner Seattle Slew, was euthanized on Sunday due to the
infirmities of old age.

"He had a convergence of symptoms that told us his system was
failing," Three Chimneys veterinarian Jim Morehead said.

Slew o'Gold won 12 of 21 starts during his three-year racing
career, including the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Wood Memorial in
1983. He won the Gold Cup again in 1984 and was named champion
handicap male that year after winning five of six races. He earned
more than $3.5 million.

The colt's only loss that year was a second-place finish to Wild
Again in the inaugural Breeders' Cup Classic. He was elected to the
National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1992.

Slew o'Gold proved to be the equal of his sire in breeding. He
was the first stallion stabled at Three Chimneys, and in his first
crop in 1985, he sired four Grade I or Group I stakes winners. His
progeny won nearly $27 million.

Slew o'Gold will be buried at Three Chimneys.

"As a young horse, he was tough," Three Chimneys Manager Sandy
Hatfield said. "He had a lot of Slew about him. But he mellowed
with age, and we enjoyed each other's company a lot the last few
years. We'll all miss him."
