American ultramarathoner Scott Jurek retains Spartathlon title

ATHENS, Greece -- Scott Jurek of Seattle won his second
straight Spartathlon ultramarathon Saturday, a 153-mile race that
retraces the journey of the legendary messenger Pheidippides 2,500
years ago.

Jurek completed the trek from Athens to Sparta in 23 hours, 12
minutes, 14 seconds.

He was among 332 runners at the foot of the Acropolis on Friday
to start the race. The route covers highways, rural roads and
mountain paths before reaching the southern Greek city.
