Mladin wins 60th AMA Superbike race

ALTON, Va. -- Mat Mladin of Australia earned his 60th AMA
Superbike victory at Virginia International Raceway on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Mladin rode a Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 for his
ninth win of the season.

Starting from the pole, Mladin followed Jordan Suzuki's Aaron
Yates for a lap before taking over the lead on the second lap. The
six-time AMA Superbike champion then pulled away to a 10.359-second
margin of victory.

"It took me awhile, but I seem to do really well at this track
now," Mladin said. "I got a decent start and everything went
according to plan. Winning my 60th feels great and hopefully I can
add a few more to that total before I'm done."

Series leader Ben Spies, of Longview, Texas, finished second
after surviving an off-track excursion on lap 16. Spies remains the
series leader, but his points lead went from 17 to 11 going into
Sunday's second leg. Jamie Hacking, of Denver, N.C., finished third
on Kawasaki by passing Yates on the final lap.
