Duke reappoints Alleva as athletic director

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke reappointed Joe Alleva as its athletic director.

The positive five-year review means Alleva will remain in charge of the university's 26 sports.

"Joe is unwaveringly loyal to Duke and to the educational values that undergird all of our programs, including athletics," president Richard H. Brodhead said Tuesday. "These are times of great challenge and change in intercollegiate athletics."

Alleva joined Duke's athletic department in 1980 and became athletic director in 1998. Under his leadership, Duke has won six national championships and 44 Atlantic Coast Conference titles.

In the spring semester, 21 of Duke's teams posted grade-point averages of at least 3.0.

"We have made tremendous progress over the past nine years and there is much more to do," Alleva said
