Mo' money

I probably should have blogged about the Matt Morris deal when it happened, but frankly, I couldn't begin to understand why the Pirates would want Morris, who will be the highest-paid player in franchise history next season. And you deserve better than my abject confusion.

Fortunately, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic is on the job, and once he has worked through everything, one can almost understand why Pirates GM Dave Littlefield wanted Morris and why owner Bob Nutting approved the trade. Well, maybe not. You decide. Skipping ahead to (almost) the end:

One, Nutting already committed to a 2007 payroll for Littlefield, and this season's expenditure on Morris falls just within that.
