Pirates designate infielder Matt Kata for assignment

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates designated infielder
Matt Kata for assignment before Thursday's game against the St.
Louis Cardinals to make room on the 25-man roster for the newly
acquired Matt Morris.

Kata, who began the season with the Texas Rangers before being
released and signing with the Pirates as a minor league free agent,
had his contract purchased by Pittsburgh on June 30.

He appeared in 16 games for the Pirates -- four starts -- hitting
.214 with two RBIs. The five-year veteran hit .186 in 31 games for
Texas.

The Pirates traded outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be
named. Morris reported to Pittsburgh on Thursday morning.
