LSU's Davis picked by Sonics, traded to Celtics

BATON ROUGE, La. -- None of the NBA's general managers
thought former LSU standout Glen "Big Baby" Davis' game was
mature enough to warrant a first-round pick Thursday night.

However, the Seattle SuperSonics took Davis with the fifth pick
in the second round, 35th overall, and sent him to Boston as part
of a blockbuster trade that also sent veteran Ray Allen to the
Celtics in exchange for fifth overall pick Jeff Green, as well as
veterans Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West.

"I didn't go as high as I wanted to go but it happens," Davis
said. "All I want to do is play. I don't know where I'm going to
fit in. I'm just glad they took me and they're giving me a
chance."

Davis, a 6-foot-9, 290-pound junior, averaged 17.7 points and
10.4 rebounds for the Tigers last season and missed several games
late in the year because of a strained quadriceps.

He is the only LSU player other than Shaquille O'Neal with
career totals surpassing 1,500 points, 900 rebounds and 100 blocks.

Davis was an AP second team All-America selection during the
2005-06 season, when LSU went to the Final Four.

Second-round picks do not receive guaranteed contracts and often
do not make the team's that pick them. But Davis, picked early in
the second round, has a good chance to make the Celtics' regular
season roster.

Because of the trade for Allen, Boston's only other draft pick
was also a second-rounder. The Celtics took USC guard Gabe Pruitt
32nd overall.

Davis, who spent the draft in Baton Rouge, said he spoke by
phone with Celtics general manager Danny Ainge and coach Doc
Rivers.

"They were just telling me they're so excited to have me,"
Davis said. "They think I'm a great player and I'm going to do
well."
