Nats put Patterson on DL with elbow inflammation

CHICAGO -- The Washington Nationals placed right-hander
John Patterson on the disabled list after Sunday's 4-3 10-inning loss to
the Chicago Cubs because of elbow inflammation and he could miss at
least a month, manager Manny Acta said.

They also activated shortstop Cristian Guzman (strained left
hamstring) and outfielder Nook Logan (sprained left foot) and sent
outfielder Michael Restovich to Triple-A Columbus.

Although an MRI on Sunday revealed no structural damage,
Patterson was told he has fluid and inflammation in his elbow. He
left in the third inning of Saturday's start against the Cubs after
reporting pain in his right biceps.

After making only eight starts in 2006 because of nerve problems
in his right elbow and undergoing surgery last July, Patterson is
1-5 with a 7.47 ERA this season.

"I didn't want to spend one day on the DL this year," said
Patterson, who was also hit in the left cheek by a foul ball during
batting practice Friday at Wrigley Field. "That was probably the
No. 1 goal coming into the season. But there comes a point where
you have to do what you have to do. I pushed it as far as I could
push it for as long as I could push it."
