Mike Schmidt whiffs, apologizes

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- He never means to cause trouble. He never means to say the wrong thing.

But here we are, 18 years after Mike Schmidt's retirement, and The Greatest Third Baseman of All Time is trying to explain himself again.

The explainees this time, the guys trying to sort out exactly what Schmidt said, are Phillies left fielder Pat Burrell and Reds masher Adam Dunn. The one word Schmidt wished he could take back this time was "mediocrity."
