Oncins quits as captain of Brazil's Davis Cup team

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Jaime Oncins resigned as Brazil's Davis
Cup captain Wednesday, a day after former No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten
quit the team.

Earlier Wednesday, two other players -- Andre Sa and Flavio
Saretta -- followed Kuerten's lead and said they wouldn't
participate in Davis Cup.

Oncins was appointed team captain three weeks ago by national
tennis federation president Nelson Nastas.

On Tuesday, Kuerten said he was angered by the captaincy change
and the federation's lack of player development.

The three-time French Open champion started playing for Brazil
in 1996 and has a 29-14 Davis Cup record. But he said he wouldn't
play next month against Paraguay in an Americas Zone Group I match.

The players "were not consulted on the venue or the change of
captains," Kuerten said on his Web site. "When we win, we players
are praised. When we lose, as we did against Canada last year, we
take the blame."
