Badgers suffer first loss since Oct. 18

MADISON, Wis. -- Mike Brown made 38 saves, Carter Thomson
broke a tie with his fourth goal of the season in the second
period, and Ferris State upset No. 4 Wisconsin 3-1 Sunday night for
the championship of the Badger Hockey Showdown.

Thomson scored off a faceoff in the Wisconsin zone 4:17 into the
second period, and Brown made the lead hold up with a number of key
saves down the stretch. He had 14 stops in the third period and was
named the tournament's most outstanding player.

Wisconsin's program-best unbeaten streak was halted at 15 games.
It was the Badgers' first loss since Oct. 18.

Mark Bomersback scored an unassisted goal with 1:22 left, off a
turnover by Badgers defenseman Tom Sawatske right in front of his
net, to seal the victory for the Bulldogs (8-8-2), who ran their
unbeaten streak to seven games.

Ferris State defenseman Simon Mangos put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0
just 3:02 into the game with his second goal of the season.

But Wisconsin defenseman Andy Wozniewski responded with a
power-play goal later in the first period.

Thomson's second-period goal provided a lead the Bulldogs
carried into the second intermission, marking the first time
Wisconsin (12-4-4) has trailed after a period since Nov. 21 against
Colorado College.

The Badgers rallied for a 2-2 tie in that game. Brian Elliott
made 23 saves for the Badgers, who were playing without top
goaltender Bernd Bruckler, who was suspended for two games on
Saturday for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Also, Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves, defensemen Ryan Suter and Jeff
Likens and center Jake Dowell are with the U.S. team at the World
Junior Championship in Finland.

Wisconsin set the school record for games without a loss at 15
with an 8-1 semifinal victory over Union on Saturday. Ferris State
advanced with a 7-4 victory over Massachusetts-Lowell.
