Tom Barlow scored his first career Major League Soccer goal in the 65th minute on Sunday, ending the longest shutout streak in league history by a defense as the 10-man New York Red Bulls beat Atlanta United 1-0 in Harrison, New Jersey.

With New York (5-5-2, 17 points) playing down a man for much of the game, Daniel Royer sent a cross from along the right wing to the back post that was deftly headed home by Barlow. The touch was just the third of the match by Barlow since he came on as a substitute in the 55th minute.

Barlow's goal ended a scoreless streak of 521 minutes for Atlanta (6-4-2, 20 points), which entered the match with five consecutive shutouts, going back to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on April 27.

The complexion of the match changed after New York's Tim Parker received a red card in the 35th minute. Parker was assessed with a foul on Josef Martinez "for a denial of a goal-scoring opportunity." Parker grabbed Martinez's arm while defending one-on-one just outside the penalty area.

Luis Robles finished with two saves for the Red Bulls, who have won four of their last five matches overall and exacted a measure of revenge after falling to the United in last year's Eastern Conference final.

Atlanta produced the better play while enjoying a one-man advantage, but was unable to benefit from 10 corner kicks.

Brad Guzan made one save for Atlanta United, which saw its five-match winning streak halted and were thwarted in their bid to equal a team record with a fourth consecutive road victory.

New York defender Amro Tarek made a brilliant defensive play while seated on the pitch to keep the match scoreless in the 28th minute. With Martinez poised to create a 1-on-1 situation against Robles, Tarek deftly extended his left leg to flick the ball away from the Atlanta forward.

The Red Bulls nearly scored just three minutes into the match as Marc Rzatkowski's shot from the edge of the box hit the crossbar.
