Flyers acquire forward Valtteri Filppula from Lightning for Mark Streit

NHL, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning unloaded the $5 million contract of Valtteri Filppula for next season, sending the forward to the Philadelphia Flyers, along with two draft picks, for defenseman Mark Streit, who was then traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Flyers get a fourth-round pick and a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft. Streit is an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The Flyers will retain 4.7 percent of the remainder of Streit's $5.25 million salary for this season.

Both teams were on the fence when it came to being buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. The Flyers are currently four points out of the final wild-card spot in the East, with the Lightning one point behind them.

Filppula, 32, has seven goals and 27 assists in 59 games. He was a member of the Red Wings' Stanley Cup championship team in 2008 and the Lightning team that lost to the Blackhawks in the 2015 finals.

The 39-year-old Streit has spent four years with the Flyers, the last three as an alternate captain. He has 21 points in 49 games this season.
