Flames acquire defenseman Stone from Coyotes for picks

NHL, Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes

The Calgary Flames have acquired defenseman Michael Stone from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a third-round draft pick and a conditional fifth-round pick.

The Coyotes retain half of Stone's salary and cap hit, sources told ESPN. Stone is a pending unrestricted free agent on July 1, and if he re-signs with Calgary, the Coyotes get the fifth-round pick in 2018. The third-round pick is in the 2017 draft.

Stone, 26, has one goal and nine assists in 45 games this season. He had 36 points in 75 games last season before suffering a knee injury in March that required ACL and MCL surgery.

"I think Calgary is a perfect fit for him," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said before Monday's game between Arizona and Anaheim. "He's got some roots there. ... He goes to the market, you never know what happens."

The Coyotes should be one of the few clear-cut sellers heading into the March 1 trade deadline since they have the second-fewest points in the league. Center Martin Hanzal tops the list of other names Arizona could move, along with Radim Vrbata and Shane Doan.

The Flames are clinging to the final wild-card spot in the West, but four teams are within six points of them.

Information from ESPN's Craig Custance and The Associated Press was used in this report.
