The nine biggest losers of the NHL offseason

Later this week, it is expected that college free agent Jimmy Vesey will decide on a landing spot.

When the Hobey Baker winner hit the market at 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday, the Buffalo Sabres had officially given up a third-round pick to the Nashville Predators for nothing in return. Sabres general manager Tim Murray traded the pick in June for exclusive rights to negotiate with Vesey, who elected to go to free agency instead of signing with Buffalo.

Murray's move was worth the risk, but his gamble did not pay off. Had he not been able to woo free agent Kyle Okposo to Buffalo, Murray would have been considered one of the biggest losers of the offseason, especially since forward Evander Kane, who Murray acquired from Winnipeg during the 2014-15 season, has faced legal issues this summer.

Who are some of the players, coaches and GMs who had the toughest summers? Let's have a look.
