First-place Kings place Christian Ehrhoff on waivers

NHL, Los Angeles Kings

TheĀ Los Angeles KingsĀ placed Christian Ehrhoff on waivers on Wednesday, and the veteran defenseman cleared on Thursday, meaning contenders were not willing to take on the full salary of the former top-four defenseman.

The Kings announced later in the day that Ehrhoff has been assigned to the Ontario (Calif.) Reign of the AHL.

The 12-year NHL veteran is on his third team in three seasons after signing a one-year contract with Los Angeles last summer. He has two goals and nine assists while averaging 15 minutes of ice time in 40 games this season.

Placing Ehrhoff on waivers came after he had two assists in a 9-2 win at Boston on Tuesday.

Ehrhoff played for Pittsburgh last season. He spent the previous three seasons in Buffalo before having the final seven years of his 10-year, $40 million contract bought out by the Sabres.

The Kings also recalled defenseman Kevin Gravel and goaltender Peter Budaj from Ontario on Thursday.
