ALBANY, N.Y. -- Three members of the Players Coalition and New York Jets owner Chris Johnson have sent a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and other state officials urging passage of comprehensive bail reform.

The letter released Thursday is signed by Johnson and players Josh McCown and Kelvin Beachum of the Jets, and Demario Davis of the Saints. Davis is a former Jet. They cited the need for action on pretrial reform in the eight remaining days of the 2018 legislative session.

"Our bail system has been failing low-income communities and communities of color for generations," they wrote. "We are at a moment of crisis, but also one of great opportunity: together, we can create a pretrial justice system that reflects the best values of New York for all New Yorkers."

Also sent the letter were Carl Heastie, speaker of the New York State Assembly, and John Flanagan, majority leader of the New York State Senate.

The coalition noted "we were so disappointed that the state budget negotiations failed to produce meaningful bail reform."
