INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts running back Frank Gore became the fifth player in NFL history to surpass 14,000 career rushing yards in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.
Gore joined Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Curtis Martin in an elite group when he gained 2 yards on a carry early in the fourth quarter.
Gore was injured on the play and remained down on one knee before walking off the Lucas Oil Stadium field to a loud ovation after his milestone was put on the video screen. He later returned to the game.
The 34-year-old Gore continues to defy the odds when it comes to how productive older running backs can be in the NFL. He began the season eighth on the all-time rushing list but he has moved ahead of Eric Dickerson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Jerome Bettis to fifth on the list.
Gore, who said last week that he plans to return for his 14th season, likely will pass Curtis Martin (14,101) for fourth on the all-time list in 2018.
Also on Sunday, Gore reached 1,200 yards from scrimmage in the fourth quarter, which extended his NFL-record streak to 12 years.
