Source: Vikings signing backup quarterback Case Keenum

NFL, Minnesota Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings have their veteran backup quarterback for the 2017 season.

A league source told ESPN's Adam Caplan the Vikings are signing former Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Case Keenum to a one-year deal worth $2 million plus incentives. The 29-year-old Keenum, who spent part of the 2014 season with the Rams while Sam Bradford was recovering from a torn ACL, replaces Shaun Hill -- his former Rams teammate -- as Bradford's backup.

The Vikings have maintained there is no timetable for the return of Teddy Bridgewater, whose leg injury last Aug. 30 precipitated the team's trade for Bradford last September.

Coach Mike Zimmer said Bridgewater is spending one week a month in Minnesota to do rehab work from a torn ACL and dislocated left knee, and Zimmer said at the NFL owners meetings this week he wants Bridgewater to resume his career with the Vikings.

But with Bridgewater's return date still uncertain, the Vikings wanted an experienced quarterback to play behind Bradford. Third-year man Taylor Heinicke, the only other quarterback on the roster, hasn't thrown a pass in an NFL game.

Keenum started a career-high nine games with the Rams last season, throwing for 2,201 yards and nine touchdowns against 11 interceptions. His best numbers came in a five-start stint for the Rams in 2015, when he posted a 87.7 passer rating while throwing four touchdown passes against one interception.
