Adrian Peterson's high asking price may be keeping him from signing

NFL

Adrian Peterson might have priced himself out of signing with a team early in free agency.

Peterson is still on the market in part because of a hefty initial asking price, league sources told ESPN.

One source from a team in the market for a running back believes Peterson wanted more than $8 million in the first year of a contract. Despite his reputation as one of the best playmakers of the modern era, that is a steep request for the current veteran tailback climate.

Eddie Lacy, one of the first running backs signed in free agency, took a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks worth up to $5.5 million that includes a weight clause.

The Green Bay Packers have interest in meeting with Peterson, but that might not happen until after next month's draft, according to ESPN's Ben Goessling.

Despite rushing titles in 2012 and 2015, Peterson turned 32 this month and missed 13 games in 2016 with a knee injury. The Vikings did not pick up Peterson's option year and instead signed former Oakland Raiders tailback Latavius Murray in free agency.
