The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed Darius Butler, who has been the team's best slot cornerback during his five seasons, to a one-year deal, it was announced Friday.
A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the Colts plan to move Butler to safety. The deal is worth $3 million and can increase to $4.5 million with incentives, the source told Schefter.
Butler, who will turn 31 on Saturday, showed off his versatility -- and his future position -- last season when he split time between cornerback and safety because of injuries and inexperience at safety.
Butler's ability to play more than one position makes him a valuable asset to teams. He led the Colts in interceptions in three of his five seasons, including in 2016 when he had three.
He has also played for the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots in his eight NFL seasons.
