Dolphins replace CB Byron Maxwell with Tony Lippett vs. Bengals

The Miami Dolphins have benched cornerback Byron Maxwell for Thursday night's game at Cincinnati and will start Tony Lippett in his place.

Miami acquired Maxwell along with linebacker Kiko Alonso and the No. 13 overall pick from the Eagles in exchange for the No. 8 overall pick. The Eagles used that pick as part of the package of picks they traded to the Browns for the No. 2 overall pick, with which they selected quarterback Carson Wentz.

In addition, Damien Williams was to start at running back. Last week's starter, Kenyan Drake, is inactive. And Laremy Tunsil will get his first NFL start at left tackle with Branden Albert also inactive.

Maxwell signed a six-year, $63 million contract with the Eagles in 2015, leaving the Seahawks as a free agent, but lasted just one season in Philadelphia.

Lippett was selected by the Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2015 draft.

Maxwell had started the Dolphins' first three games.

He struggled mightily last Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Receiver Terrelle Pryor, a converted quarterback, beat Maxwell several times and finished with a career-high eight receptions for 144 yards. Maxwell also didn't play well in a Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase had said during the week that players must perform up to par or risk getting benched.

Information from ESPN's James Walker was used in this report.
