Source: Pats RT Sebastian Vollmer (hip) could miss entire season

NFL, New England Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots placed starting right tackle Sebastian Vollmer on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which theoretically means he could return later in the 2016 season, but it is more likely that Vollmer will miss the entire season, a source tells ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Including the playoffs, the 6-foot-8, 320-pound Vollmer has played in 98 games (90 starts) since joining the Patriots as a 2009 second-round draft choice. He has been sidelined by a nagging hip injury.

"Oh man, I love Sebastian, and whatever he needs or whatever it is, I'll always be there for him," starting left tackle Nate Solder said last week when the severity of Vollmer's injury was first learned. "Sebastian is an awesome guy, one of my best friends. There's so many things [he brings to the team], but as a group, we've just got to move forward."

The Patriots have turned to six-year veteran Marcus Cannon in Vollmer's absence, just as they did in the second half of the 2013 season when Vollmer broke his leg and missed the final eight regular-season games and two playoff games.

In addition, the Patriots placed running back Dion Lewis on the reserve/PUP list, which was expected after they revealed two weeks ago that Lewis would undergo a second surgery on his left knee. That means Lewis is out for at least the first six weeks of the regular season and won't count against the team's roster.
