SAN DIEGO -- Wasting little time to bolster depth at receiver, the San Diego Chargers agreed to terms with veteran receiver James Jones on Tuesday.
He signed a one-year contract, the team announced.
Jones traveled to San Diego on Tuesday for a workout that included receivers Brian Hartline and Lance Moore.
Chargers receiver Stevie Johnson suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee on Sunday that will require surgery, leaving him out indefinitely. The Chargers have solid depth at receiver behind starters Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin in Dontrelle Inman, Tyrell Williams and Javontee Herndon, but it's mostly unproven.
Enter Jones, an experienced NFL player who could fill the void if Johnson is out for an extended period of time.
Jones, 32, finished with 50 receptions for 890 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 games with the Green Bay Packers in 2015. He signed with the Packers last summer -- his second stint with the team -- after Jordy Nelson's season-ending knee injury.
A nine-year NFL veteran, Jones also has experience in the AFC West, totaling 73 receptions for 666 yard six touchdowns in one season with the Oakland Raiders in 2014.
The Chargers currently have 12 receivers on the team's 90-man roster. San Diego had an open roster spot because first-round selection Joey Bosa has not signed his rookie deal.
