Texans QB Brian Hoyer passes concussion test, cleared to play

NFL, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints

HOUSTON -- Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer passed the concussion protocol Monday morning and is cleared to play, coach Bill O'Brien said.

Hoyer suffered a concussion that caused memory problems in the third quarter of the Texans' win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 16. He missed Sunday's game against the New York Jets as backup T.J. Yates led Houston (5-5) to a 24-17 victory.

"I want to see him get back to where he was where he was making good decision for the team," O'Brien said of Hoyer. "Throwing the ball accurately. Doing a really good job on third down. Understanding the game plan. Doing the job that it takes to win the game. ...

"We just need him to continue to take care of the ball and continue to get us in the right play."

The Texans host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Hoyer has started five of the Texans' 10 games this season. After Hoyer struggled in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs, former Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett took over until Hoyer won back the starting job in Week 6.

O'Brien later admitted Hoyer should not have been benched.

Hoyer is one of three quarterbacks who has thrown multiple touchdown passes to DeAndre Hopkins this season. Until his injury last week, Hoyer had thrown multiple touchdowns in five consecutive games.
