The longtime nemesis of female athletes, the torn ACL, could alter the fortunes of several teams this season.
Victims include Oregon's
Shaquala Williams, Penn State's Chrissy Falcone, Louisiana Tech's Catrina Frierson and Maryland's Vicki Brick.
Xavier lost starting
point guard Amy Waugh to a ruptured Achilles' tendon.

Berthieu, the 12th-ranked Lady Monarchs' scoring leader, will
have surgery Nov. 16, the day before Old Dominion opens its home
season against Syracuse. Old Dominion plays No. 13 Penn State at
the Tip-Off Classic in Hartford, Conn., on Sunday.
"We are all very sorry that Lucienne has been dealt another
devastating injury," coach Wendy Larry said. "With the history of
injuries that she has endured in her basketball career, we were
hoping that this year would be injury-free."
"We anxiously hope for her return to our team next season,"
Larry added.
Berthieu has a history of knee ailments. She had minor surgery
for an unrelated injury to the same knee last month and had hoped
to play with a knee brace.
The 6-foot-2 senior from Rennes, France, will have one
more year of eligibility, ODU said.
Berthieu led the team in scoring and rebounding the last two
seasons. She averaged 17.8 points and 8.9 rebounds last season,
when she made 60.7 percent of her shots.
She also was a preseason Naismith Player of the Year candidate.
The award is determined in voting by a group of coaches,
journalists and administrators. | |
