ATHENS, Ga. -- Add Chattanooga Coach Wes Moore to the
Christi Thomas fan club, particularly since he does not have to
face her again.
Thomas, a 6-foot-5 freshman, scored 22 points and grabbed seven
rebounds as seventh-ranked Georgia overwhelmed Chattanooga 81-43
Wednesday night.
"She was able to catch, turn and shoot," said Moore. "She is
obviously a great player. With her size and skills, she makes it
very tough to match up."
Thomas's own coach is pleased with her play as well.
"We knew offensively she was gifted, and she's going to get
better and better," said Georgia's Andy Landers.
"I still want her to be more active on both ends of the floor
with her feet and be more aggressive. Every player has to become
tough once they get to college. She's going to get there, and when
she does she's going to be special."
Thomas scored Georgia's first basket one minute into the game
and its last basket with 3:45 to play.
The Lady Mocs (3-2) turned the ball over 24 times, shot just 25
percent and lost the battle of the boards 48-43 as Georgia (4-2)
dominated in every aspect.
"Georgia seemed to be like sharks with blood in the water once
they got started," said Moore. "We did look a little intimidated.
They were able to jump in the passing lanes for steals and layups.
It seemed when we beat them back door there was always a post
there."
Chattanooga suffered three scoring droughts in the first half as
Georgia steadily pulled away. When they could not get the ball to
Thomas inside, Coco Miller and Deanna Nolan traded jumpers over the
UTC zone.
Damita Bullock led Chattanooga with nine points.
Tawana McDonald blocked two shots to move into fourth on the
career list. She has 164, one more than Tammye Jenkins had in
1987-91.
