STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer added
another accomplishment to her impressive coaching resume.
Freshman guard Nicole Powell scored 26 points as Stanford (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP) defeated Pacific 73-65 Sunday, giving VanDerveer her 500th
career victory.
VanDerveer, 500-143 (.778) overall, has collected 348 of her
victories with the Cardinal. Stanford, which has won two NCAA
titles under VanDerveer, is seeking its 13th consecutive trip to
the NCAA tournament.
"The reason you win 500 games as a coach is having great
players and wonderful people," said VanDerveer, who has spent 15
of her 22 coaching years at Stanford. "I'm really enjoying the
game and the day. This is a great place to coach and a great
situation."
Susan King scored 16 points for the Cardinal, winners of three
in a row after a season-opening loss. Sarah Dimson added 10 points
and 13 rebounds.
"I'm so excited for Tara," Dimson said. "I'm happy to be part
of a team that won No. 500 for her. That's an amazing
accomplishment. She'll be revered for a long time to come."
Millie Kimpton scored 14 points to lead Pacific (2-2), whose
two-game winning streak was snapped. Ahsalic Johnson added 12
points.
"I have the utmost respect for Tara," said Pacific coach
Sherri Murrell. "I was 11 years old when she coached her first
Division I game and she put west coast basketball on the map. If it
had to be anyone, I'm glad it was Tara. She means a lot to this
profession."
VanDerveer, honored by the crowd which held up flash cards with
"500" written on them, became the 17th coach in women's
basketball history to reach 500 career wins.
"When I saw the whole crowd hold up those "500" signs, I got
a chilling feeling in my body," said Powell. "It was an
incredible feeling."
The Tigers opened the second half with a 9-2 run, and took a
45-42 lead four minutes into the half on a jumper by Johnson.
Pacific still led 50-46 with 13:48 remaining to play, but then
went seven scoreless minutes, allowing Stanford to build a
comfortable 60-50 edge. Powell's 3-pointer at 11:17 put the
Cardinal ahead to stay.
Pacific held a 28-27 edge following a pair of free throws by
Johnson with 5:56 left in the half, but Stanford went on a 12-2 run
to make it 40-34 at the break.
