Craig lifts Duke over Duquesne

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Duquesne's players came away from their lopsided loss to Duke impressed. Duke coach Gail Goestenkors had a different perspective.

Freshman Rometra Craig scored 17 points as No. 3 Duke beat Duquesne 97-66 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Duke Women's Classic.

Duke (6-0) forced 26 turnovers, made eight of its first 10 attempts from 3-point range and shot 64 percent from the field.

"That was a whole new level of basketball, for sure," Duquesne guard Shiri Sharon said. "They're a very good team, and everybody knows it."

Goestenkors wasn't quite as impressed, pointing to the Blue Devils' slim rebounding advantage (37-34) and 24 turnovers.

"We started off strong and looked good with our press, then we got a big lead and went to a zone and did not look good at all," Goestenkors said.

"We did not play smart. We played distracted. We all had a lot of friends and family in town and we played distracted. We never got into a good flow, offensively or defensively."

Duke, which reached the final of its own tournament for the 13th year in a row, will face Toledo in the championship game Sunday. Duquesne will play Radford in the consolation game.

Georgia Schweitzer had 14 points and Missy West added 11 for Duke.

Oxana Sketko led Duquesne (2-1) with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Khalihah Este-Shehu added 11 points.

Schweitzer, Craig and West had two 3-pointers and 10 points each in leading Duke to a 49-20 halftime lead. Duquesne made one of 11 shots in the final 9:32 of the first half.

"They played with very good pressure," said Duquesne coach Dan Durkin. "And they kept it up for the whole game. It was good for us to experience that. It will make us better in the long run."

Schweitzer hit two 3-pointers to spark a 10-run early in the first half, then hit three straight baskets to put Duke up 34-15 with 7:17 left.

Duquesne's Shiri Sharon sparked a 6-0 run with a pair of baskets to start the second half, but Duke scored on its next 12 possessions for a 72-33 lead with 12:34 left.
